Ushers
1) What this ministry is…
Ushers do more than hand out bulletins, bring forward the communion elements and food basket, and collect the offering. For most guests and regular parishioners, ushers are their first contact on a Sunday with the Christian family of Saint Mark’s on the Campus. As such their chief and most important function is to greet each person upon arrival, providing a friendly welcome to visitors and regulars alike. Ushers also monitor the building during services, and in case of emergency, would act as security. Lastly, the ushers tidy up the pews after services. The Junior Ushers help on the first Sunday of each month with the second collection for outreach.
2) Are meetings held? How much time is involved?
Ushers do not meet on a regular basis. Ushers usually serve once every month or two. They must arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled service or earlier if the pews racks need attention and remain for 15 minutes afterwards to tidy up the pews.
3) Are any special talents or qualifications needed?
It’s useful for ushers to have some knowledge of the congregation, but such knowledge is not absolutely required. What is required is a genuinely welcoming attitude toward members and visitors. Other helpful, but not required skills include being observant and a little aggressive.
4) How does someone get involved?
